Planning an animation (P3,P4,M2)

MoodBoard:

The purpose of the moodboard is to show the client my initial ideas towards the brief provided to me. I gathered these images to highlight my initial ideas, as well as depicting to main conventions of both the genre and location the animation is taking place in. The idea is too take different aspects and ideas  from these images, combining them to create the best, brief matching animation.

Character Analysis:

Movements:
I have outlined the movements of my main characters within my annotations.
The movements of my characters will be pretty alike, with both the main protagonist and P.C Podgers; moving in a medium passed manner. This is because, as I am using stop-motion and clay, the possibilities are confined. However, the zombies will move in a much faster pace, as too fit into my storyboard and plan of having the zombie run past the protagonist quickly.  Also, the difference in speed differentiates the character types. The speed of the zombie adds more of a horror factor - the uncertainty. The reason I chose these movements as it is going to the be the easiest to achieve, in my limited time, as well as result in the animation being the best possible standard.

I chose these characters specifically as they best fit into both the target audience, and the general outline of my animation. Having the two protagonist as young teens makes it most believable that they would make the mistake, of thinking that the people, are in fact zombies. Them having dark skin complexion also highlights the area in which they are from, making the animation geographically suitable and correct, as well as meaning that the animation is fit for purpose and accurate.

I chose to fully focus on the movements, lighting and sound of the characters, more than the facial expressions. This is due to my characters being made from clay, meaning that the facial expressions would be very hard to implement without potentially jeopardising the whole animation.

BackPlates:

This image will be used in scene 2. The red sky in the morning foreshadows a bad event is on the horizon.

This image will be used in scene 10. This will be a comedic scene, of the two protagonist sitting next to zombie, all in a line.

This image will be used in scene 9. This is where the two protagonist will collect the weapons used to fight the oncoming zombies.

This image will be used in scene 3. This will be filler shot, to keep the animation moving and making sense. The damaged look sets the tone for what type of living situation the protagonist are in.

This image will be used in scene 4. This will be filler shot, to keep the animation moving and making sense. The modern, yet cracked apparel shows an attempt to modernise their lives, but still being held back by their financial and loving situations.

This image will be used in scene 5 through 9. This is where a big part of the animation will take place, showing the major scenes in the animation. The house lined up and clear road make for the best looking animation.

This image will be used in scene 11 through 14. Its emptiness and vastness allows me to put all the characters in I need, as well as being the appropriate location for these shots - Leicester square.

Synopsis:
The animation starts off with two best mates waking up after a somewhat heavy night. We see a image of a red sky when they first way up, foreshadowing that something bad will happen, playing off the classic nursery rhyme 'red sky at night shepherds delight, red sky at morning, shepherds morning.'

After some everyday routines, the action kicks in. The two protagonists walk out their house and spot a zombie running past them...well at least they think its a zombie.  They jump behind a car, waiting for the threat to pass. The teens head over to the garage, and arm themselves with everything they can find that would potentially be lethal too zombies.

They head down to Leicester square, and face of against a crowd a zombies. After a little time, the zombies disperse, running in all directions with very human like screams. The two protagonist are arrested, ending with a zoom out over the chaos over Leicester square, with a voice over describing the details about the march.

Script:

Target Audience:
The target audience for my animation would be 16-27 year olds. This is because the brief calls for an animation aimed at an adult audience of horror enthusiasts. 16 is the perfect cut of age between immaturity and starting to find appeals in content that an older audience would also be appealed to. By aiming at 16-27 year olds I can include content and themes that would appeal directly to the younger end of my target audience. But also resulting in the older end of the target audience finding entertainment from it. This will result in a very successful animation, as it will incorporate themes and scenes appealing to people across all ages.

Purpose:
The purpose of the animation is very clear and simple. The purpose is to promote the march taking place in Leicester Square in a fun and engaging way. The purpose of the animation is too provide people with the necessary information needed for the march, including dates, times, locations and theme of the march. The purpose is informative, as well as entertaining and engaging to an appropriate audience.

Medium:
The explicit calls of the brief are for us to advertise on mobile app. Therefore I will have to make sure that my animation is suitable for this medium. This medium will enable my animation to be a success as the portability of mobile device's enables consumers to access the animation wherever, whenever, not hampering the distribution of information and resulting in the march gaining the exposure it needs.

I will also ensure that the animation is able to be advertised on cross-media platforms, making it usable on social media and YouTube. This is because, despite the convenience of having the animation on a mobile app, this means the information will only be seen by people who download the app, resulting in a very niche audience that the animation will reach. By putting it on social media platforms and YouTube, it will open up the audience and exposure further, reaching people who may not download the app.

For the creation of my animation, I will be using stop-motion. This is because, despite the fact it's very time consuming, it is the most simple form of animation for a new animator to use. This means that I will be able to get the best possible result, with my limited expertise in this field.

I will create the animation using clay to create the models. This will be done

Risk Assessment:
A risk that I may encounter during the creation of the animation is the pieces of clay getting destroyed or ruined. This could jeopardise my entire animation, as the characters will have no uniformity between scenes, meaning the animation won't be completed to a high quality. To ensure this doesn't happen I will make multiple copies of the same clay models, leaving room for accidents to happen.

Another risk that may occur is the set being moved. As I am doing stop-motion, the set will be positioned very specifically to the camera, so the slightest change to the position of the green screen can jeopardise the entire project. To ensure this doesn't happen, I will ensure their is a certain distance that people can stand, in relation to the set.

The lighting of the room where the animation will be filmed will effect the footage. This could result in a poorly lit film, taking away some of the effect for the audience. To overcome this, I will use a flag. This is a technical piece of equipment, used to either divert or block out light. This will allow me to control the light on set, resulting in the best looking footage.

Finally, another risk I may encounter is the camera running out of charge. This is would be a detrimental issue as the only way I can change the battery would be by moving the camera about, resulting in the full set having to be re-positioned. This will add more time to the production, as well as it being very hard to get the exact same position. To eradicate this problem, I will ensure that the camera is fully charged.

Equipment and Personnel required:
As the creation of the animation is a very demanding and time consuming task, I will have to ensure that I have an extensive list of personnel and equipment on set, or ready to be called upon if needed.

As I will be using stop-motion, I will have to ensure I have both a high-quality camera and spare batteries. This is because without a good camera, the animation will come out a poor quality and not too the standard required for a mobile app and resulting in it nothing well on cross-media platforms. Spare batteries are essential as the whole process will take some time, so there is a high possibility that the camera won't have enough power to survive throughout the entire process. To counter this, I will ensure I have multiple spare batteries on set, so this will not hold up the process as a whole.

For personnel, as most will be completed by myself, I won't require many personnel. However, I will require voice actors, if I choose to have dialogue in my animation. This is too clearly highlight the different characters and create layers to my animation, giving the audience different elements of the animation to relate too and create a connection too.

Furthermore, as it's all hand-drawn stop motion, I will need to ensure that I have a plethora of spare card and pens on set. As the drawings are on card, this leave them vulnerable to water damage or just over use, causing them to lose their quality and thus be rendered useless for my purposes. To overcome this, I will ensure that I can easily re-create these drawings to the same standard and detail.

Another vital part of equipment that we will require is a spare SD card. This is important as it will allow us to continue filming, either if we have used up all the storage on one SD. Furthermore, this is important due too it eradicating to time constraint of a full SD, as well as not limiting us to just the footage of one SD.

Myself and a dedicated voice artist will be used as the voice over artists. This is because, despite one of the actors being below par, these are the cheapest options for my animation, due to the production not being blessed with a hefty budget. By doing the voice over's myself, I am extracting the possibility of unavailability, subtracting time constraints and removing the chance of the project being halted, due to crew not being available. Additionally, it is a convention of animations.

Gantt Chart:

The contingencies that I will have too implicate for are:
- Spare clay, in case the creation of the animation goes wrong, or the characters brake.
- Multiple copies of the script, in case one goes missing.
- Have multiple copies of the finished project

StoryLine:
Equilibrium:
The protagonist arise from their slumber, feeling a little bit worse for wear. They are awoken to a red sky, metaphorically warning them of the danger they are about to face. They go about their normal morning routine, not expecting anything wrong.

Disequilibrium:
The protagonists walk outside, and spot a Zombie in the distance running in their direction. They dart behind a car and hide from the mythical being. They wait for the zombie to run past before moving from behind the car.

Recognition:
The protagonist realise they will need to take on this problem themselves. They arm themselves and prepare for a battle against the zombies.

New Equilibrium:
Turns out the 'Zombie's' are in fact only people in costumes, attending the zombie march. They get arrested for bearing arms and threatening members of the public with them.

M2:
There are many strengths to my idea, as well as having some limitations and weaknesses that could jeopardise the effectiveness of the animation.

Strength
The target audience of the animation is zombie fanatics, who attend the march yearly. This means they would expect to see certain aspects and styles in my animation, such as gore and violence. People would consider the lack of this is in my animation a weakness. But I consider it a strength. This is because the animation will still incorporate some form of gore and violence, but a minimalist amount, with the main focus being comedic and informative.

Another strength of my animation is how appropriately it fits in with the implicit and explicit calls of the brief. The brief wants the animation to be suitable for a mobile device app. However, making it appropriate just for this limits the exposure the video will get, and therefore the information about the march won't go as far as we hope. Therefore I made sure that the animation would be suitable to be placed onto wider platform, such as YouTube. This opportunity will allow the information about the march reach a wider range of people; people outside the app.

Weaknesses
A weakness of my animation could be that there are many zombie-themed animations available at this moment in time, with it being one of the most popular themes for production companies to base an animation around. To overcome this, will have to make sure that my animation sticks out from the crowd. This very crowed market could result in my animation going completely under the radar, and thus resulting in people not getting the information about the march.

Opportunities
With the animation, there are an abundance of opportunities for cross-platform collaborations and convergence. These opportunities will result in a large gross and exposure of the march, resulting in my animation achieving its ultimate goal of making people aware of the march taking place. Without the opportunities for cross-platfrom convergence, the animation would be limited to just one platform, the brands app, which is a very secluded target audience.

Threats
A threat that we may face during the creation is breaking a regulation issue, resulting in my animation being removed from public viewing. This would again mean that the march has no form of advertisement and thus me not meeting the client's brief. To overcome this, we will have too ensure that we meet the demands create by horror enthusiasts, whist keeping it suitable for public viewing, and making sure that the information for the march doesn't go unnoticed.
